A country of high mountains and blue lakes stretching from west to east between the 39th and 43rd parallel. The majestic Tien Shan and Pamir mountain systems stretch across the entire territory of Kyrgyzstan with such famous highest world peaks as Victory Peak (7439m), Lenin Peak (7134m) and the beautiful Khan Tengri Peak (6995m).
Enormous amplitudes of absolute heights, complex terrain, long-term geological development and other factors determined the diversity of natural conditions and the wealth of natural resources.
It is in these places that the hunt for one of the most beautiful wild sheep and one of the most outstanding hunting trophies in the whole world is carried out - the Marco Polo argali.
Argali is considered a difficult animal to hunt, firstly, because it lives at high altitudes, and secondly, because of the difficulty of obtaining a hunting permit and its high price. In addition to all this, not every hunter will be physically able to endure hunting conditions in the highlands due to oxygen starvation.

Location
Republic of Kyrgyzstan, Tien Shan mountains

How to get there
- by plane to Bishkek
- transfer by car or helicopter to the hunting camp

Season
from August 15 to December 1 and from January 6 to March. The best time is October-November and January-February. In August, the ram climbs high into the mountains due to the heat.

Duration
10 days

Hunting
The goal is to obtain a trophy specimen of the Marco Polo ram or argali, named after the famous Italian traveler and merchant of the 13th century, who admiringly described the large number of wild rams with incredibly large horns he encountered on the snowy slopes of the Pamirs.

Specific mountain sickness due to lack of oxygen and a sharp drop in atmospheric pressure necessarily requires special preparation. Base camps are located at an altitude of about 2800 - 3300m, and hunting is carried out in the upper zone, at an altitude of 4800m above sea level. Below 3000m it is practically impossible to find it. Upon arrival at the base, you will need a couple of days to acclimatize.
They leave the base before dawn on foot, on horseback or in off-road vehicles. Most often they travel on horses, because... this makes it possible to penetrate into the most remote places. The feeding or resting areas of rams during the daytime are examined. Be prepared to spend 8 hours in the saddle.
Hunting methods - approach or standby. When a trophy specimen is discovered, the approach is carried out on foot. The hunter must also be prepared to confidently shoot at the threshold of detection by animals - a distance of 400-600m.
In the mountains, apparent distances seem much smaller than real ones, and determining the distance can be very difficult, because clean air and open areas create the impression of proximity of objects. When shooting in the mountains, the bullet's flight range is greater than in low-lying areas due to the decrease in atmospheric density. Thus, when shooting in the mountains with rifled weapons, it is necessary to make adjustments.

Accommodation
Depending on the season and trophy, accommodation in six hunting camps located north and south of the Naryn River:

Hunting camp "Ulan" is located in the northeast of the Naryn region at an altitude of 2800m above sea level. The road from Bishkek takes about 8 hours. The hunting camp is a residential building with heating and a sauna.

Hunting camp "Boz-Zhalpak" is located in the west of the Issyk-Kul region at an altitude of 3300m above sea level. The road from Bishkek takes about 9 hours. The camp is equipped with a residential cottage, tents, as well as yurts, a sauna and a dining room.

Hunting camp "Emegen" is located in the south-eastern part of the Issyk-Kul region at an altitude of 3600m above sea level. The road from Bishkek is about 10-12 hours drive. The hunting camp has cottages and trailers with heating, a dining room and a sauna.

Hunting camp "Zhany-Zher" is located in the southeast of the Naryn region at an altitude of 3600m above sea level. The road from Bishkek takes 14-16 hours. The hunting camp is equipped with cottages (with heating), a trailer-dining room, and a sauna.

Introduction

Halfway from Paris to Tokyo, west of China, south of Kazakhstan and east of Uzbekistan, 5000 km southeast of Moscow, lies a beautiful mountainous country - Kyrgyzstan. Mountains occupy 94% of the state's territory. The peaks of the Tien Shan and Pamirs, forever covered with snow, alpine meadows with scatterings of flowers, stormy rivers and waterfalls among the rocks, the aroma of steppe wormwood, blue lakes and green valleys - this is the nature of Kyrgyzstan. The pearl of Central Asia is the emerald blue Lake Issyk-Kul. However, not only the huge variety of natural landscapes, the abundance of mountain lakes and waterfalls, alpine meadows and glaciers, as well as exclusive natural resort areas attract travelers from all over the world, but also the rich historical and cultural heritage and wonderful traditions of the Kyrgyz people.

The climate of Kyrgyzstan is continental, with hot summers and frosty winters. Temperatures can vary significantly within one day, especially high in the mountains. In November: the weather is usually windy, around +1 +7 C during the day, -1...-4 C at night.

For Russian citizens, entry into Kyrgyzstan is visa-free.

Hunting season

Marco Polo Argali- from August 15 to December 1. It is best to plan your trip no earlier than November 1st.

Trophy

Argali Marco Polo

Argali Marco Polo

Also called Pamir argali. Named after Marco Polo, the Venetian merchant and traveler who was the first European to describe this species. Height at withers 112-120 cm, weight up to 135 kg. Females are significantly smaller in size than males. This is a big ram, his legs are high and slender. Both males and females have horns, but in males they appear much larger and more impressive, and can make up up to 13% of the total body weight. The horns are twisted into a spiral with the ends outward and upward and represent the most spectacular trophy of all subspecies of rams. The horns are triangular in cross-section, with a sharp frontal-occipital edge. The longest horns were registered in 1895, the length of the horn was 190.5 cm. However, in this subspecies the horns are relatively thin, reaching only 43 cm in circumference for record trophies, and on average up to 36-39 cm. The skull together with the horns weighs only 11-12 kg. Due to the relative narrowness in diameter, the horns look even longer than they actually are. Body color varies from light sand to dark gray-brown, but the lower part of the body usually looks noticeably lighter. On the sides along the entire body there are dark brown stripes, clearly separating the darker top and lighter bottom. The muzzle and tail are light. Males are distinguished by the fact that they have a ring of light hair around the neck, as well as elongated hair on the nape. Animals shed twice a year, and the winter coat is noticeably lighter than the summer one, the fur is much longer, making the animal appear larger than it actually is. The average trophy of a Marco Polo ram in Kyrgyzstan reaches 127-133 cm, the best trophies are 140-153 cm. The Marco Polo ram is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful animals and one of the best hunting trophies. It lives at heights that not every hunter can handle.

Central Asian ibex

Central Asian ibex

This subspecies of mountain goat may be the largest in body size and horn length. Males reach a weight of 130 kg and even more. The coloration is very different from the Siberian ibex and Gobi ibex. In winter, males are light brown in color, with darker sides, shoulder blades and thighs. Usually a dark dorsal strap and a lighter "saddle" are clearly distinguishable, which can vary greatly in size, shape and location. A dark stripe separates the sides from the whitish belly. There are clear dark stripes on the front side of the front legs, while the hind legs have lighter stripes. The head is gray, the beard is brown. A large number of individual color variations in coloration and markings are possible. The horns are very long, relatively thin, and the ridges are relatively small.

Hunting territory

Issyk-Kul region, Muz-Bulak, Koychi, and Kaindy districts.

The main attraction of the Issyk-Kul region is Lake Issyk-Kul itself, located in the north and surrounded by the Tien Shan mountain ranges. This is where most of the region's population lives. In the south there are mountains and mountain meadows used as summer pastures. The highest peaks of the Tien Shan are located here, including Khan Tengri at 7010 meters and Pobeda Peak (7439 m).

Naryn region, hunting areas Arpa, Ak-Sai.

Naryn region is located in the central part of Kyrgyzstan. Occupies the valleys and slopes of the Inner Tien Shan mountains.

Hunting process

Hunting in Kyrgyzstan requires the ability to sit well in the saddle. Starting early in the morning, the hunter is in search of trophy males, riding around the surrounding area on horseback and inspecting the mountain slopes and feeding areas. The approach is made on foot as soon as a trophy of the desired size is spotted. It is advisable to be in good physical shape. During a hunt, you often have to spend the night at a flying camp; this allows you to stay at the heights where the big males live and save your energy. The shot is most often fired from a long distance, 200-500 meters.
